Are You Able to Solve It? The Overlooked Dutch Creation Which Shaped the Modern Globe
There are numerous contenders to claim the designation as “planet’s greatest invention.” The wheel. The printing press. The steam engine.
As per a new book, however, that title belongs to the mechanised timber mill conceived through Dutchman Corneliszoon van Uitgeest in 1593.
“Prior to automated cutting, constructing a simple merchant vessel required approximately ten lumberjacks working over 90 days,” notes Jaime Dávila. “With wind-powered sawmills, the same quantity of cut lumber might be manufactured within a week.”
Thanks to this speedy mechanical cutter, that converted timber into boards using virtually no human effort, Dutch builders were able to build ships faster than any other nation, which unleashed a century of Dutch maritime, financial and artistic dominance in the continent and the globe.
The Original Genuine Manufacturing Device
The inventor's sawmill, contends the writer, was “humanity’s initial true factory machine.” A windmill turned a wheel. One component converted the circular motion to vertical action to power the cutting blade. Another component transformed the spinning movement into a lateral motion advancing the log to the blade. A ratchet system moved the wood forward a measured step per cycle.
“Every component was modest by itself. The Dutchman’s brilliance was to integrate them in order that they acted within a perfectly controlled sequence, sawing on every downward stroke and advancing with each return motion. It was a remarkably intelligent use of basic components.”
A fact that brings us up to today’s puzzle. The task is for you to reinvent one of the basic ideas underpinning Corneliszoon’s invention.

A “sleeve”, that is a cylinder or sleeve through which one of the bars will fit perfectly. (Assume you can put things on a stand, so the components don’t fall down.)
