A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and management of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We will meticulously determine what caused this accident,” stated the country's president.
The president announced that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the previous administration, whose term finished the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's strategic goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic increase of its role in civilian infrastructure. They were completed at an accelerated pace, defying predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously fueled significant questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party demanded an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was suggested until the completion of a full safety audit. The party stated that the situation "demands immediate answers."
In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these vital undertakings.
