Larian Studios Announce a Fresh Divinity, Declaring it Their Largest RPG to Date

The buzz around this year's gaming ceremony was significant, notably after host Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious image of a strange statue. The question has been revealed. The acclaimed developer is creating a completely new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a daring trailer featuring striking imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the literal unleashing of hell.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio warned that a direct sequel to its beloved RPGs is not being worked on now.

Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This phrasing implies that the team is likely building a faster-paced experience instead of another turn-based title. For now, this is speculation, as only a teaser video is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is widely praised and it's fair to claim it kicked off the modern wave of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for intricate stories, branching plots, and flexible progression—qualities that subsequently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is classic fantasy, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is brimming with unique possibilities you can achieve by choosing a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.

The series is also famously open-ended, enabling players to experiment throughout the entire experience. Virtually all objectives can be solved in a variety of manners, sometimes in lateral fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you heeded something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by moving environmental hazards in a clever way.

A New Chapter Begins

It is precisely these elements that have cemented the series to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, the RPG community can get ready for more where that came from in this groundbreaking franchise.
